This is a typeface, or font, where the shape of each character is defined by a pattern of dots. Bitmapped fonts are easy for a printer to use, but they are of a fixed size. If you increase the size, you will see the dots enlarged and the characters will appear jagged. To get around this, outline fonts were developed.
